Throughout 2019 Ann Rutter and Jenny Novinsky redrew the blocks in EQ8, coloring each one in grayscale and in full color. “In order to recreate BlockBase we were going to have to go through and redraw every single block,” Seuberling says, “So we thought, why don’t we just republish the book? It seemed like the perfect fit for us.” When they began the process in 2018, one of the first steps was connecting with Brackman. “We knew that would just be a huge overhaul for us to create so we really had to have the time to do it,” Seuberling explains.

In recent years, they stopped selling BlockBase altogether, despite its popularity, because it badly needed an update and a Mac version. Later they made it available as CDs, but still only for Windows. In the late 1990s, when Electric Quilt founder Penny McMorris was looking to create quilt software the obvious solution was to license the contents of Brackman’s book. In fact, Brackman and Electric Quilt have been a perfect pair from the start. The cost-benefit analysis of drawing 4,000 quilt blocks just never worked.įor quilt design software company Electric Quilt, though, this project was ideal. Over the years she’s had conversations with multiple publishers about taking on the project, but plans always fell through when they fully grasped the scope of the task. The standout "Searching For" is a throwback to classic psych-pop that falls somewhere in between "Paperback Writer" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" "Hissing My Plea" dresses the album's concerns up in groovy strings and go-go boots and "Own Ways" closes the album on a note somewhere between triumphant and defiant as the band ultimately finds its path. While drifting tracks such as "Passersby" and "Your Island" recall that album, Plaza's most attention-getting songs have a little more bite.
Reunited with Woods' Jarvis Taveniere as producer, the band sounds less mystical than it did on Held in Splendor. Paradoxically, this searching and indecision result in some of Quilt's most focused music yet. "Are you looking for an answer? Are you looking for a cure? Maybe you should want more," Anna Fox Rochinski sings on the prickly "O'Connor's Barn," while Shane Butler sighs "I'll be fine in confusion" on "Padova" as a harp underscores his fragile state of mind. Being so far from home may have contributed to the rootless, restless feeling underpinning Plaza nearly all of its songs are about being in flux. After spending much of 2014 on the road touring in support of Held in Splendor, Quilt began working on songs for their third album in a historic building in Atlanta - a long way from their Boston home base.
